Every spring the Piast Institute in coordination with the Hamtramck Drug Free Community Coalition (HDFCC) organize the Hamtramck Health Hike. The hike begins on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at 10 a.m. with staggered start times at the Piast Institute at 11633 Joseph Campau. The Health Hike is meant to activate the community and inform the residents about being and staying healthy. COVID-19 forced the organizers to move the hike to August from its original date in May as they look to have close to 300 participants. To register for the hike, click here.

“This year, due to COVID-19 there were a lot of changes made to make the free family event safe for all,” explained Malgorzata Tulecki, Executive Director of the Piast Institute. “We had pushed the date back this year and are implementing staggered start times to avoid large group gatherings and keep social distancing requirements. Registration of each participant is also required so that we can better coordinate the start times. In the past no registration was required. We will have volunteers along the route monitoring social distance requirements and using a pool noodle to gage distance between participants.”

Sterling Services LTD donation will be used to treat the Hamtramck Health Hike participants with ice cream following their 5K. Sterling is not the only local business helping this event out as this is free to the community, as donations drive this event. Even though Sterling Services blends petroleum and chemical products at their bulk liquid storage facility they believe and support their employees and residents of the community living an active and drug free lifestyle.

Other local businesses sponsoring this event include the Hamtramck Police Department, Hamtramck Fire Department, The Balkan House, Hamtramck Recreation Department, Authority Health, HDFCC, Piast Institute just to name a few.

“Without sponsors like Sterling Services, there would be no community events such as the Hamtramck Health Hike,” Tulecki explained. “Each year we start with zero dollars and the planning committee raises funds to purchase items such as t-shirts, backpacks, giveaways, prizes, etc. This event is put on with businesses and individuals that dedicate their time and services to put this on completely FREE for participants. Each part of the walk, volunteers, the posters printed, the volunteer items, the giveaways, water bottles, everything is donated or sponsored so make sure to thank everyone listed as a sponsor!”

The Hamtramck Health Hike is the idea of a group at the HDFCC looking to educate the residents on maintaining proper health including health screening, cooking demonstrations, as well as activities to keep children engaged.

“The Hamtramck Health Hike was an idea that stemmed from the Hamtramck Drug Free Community Coalition (HDFCC) as a way to get community members out for a physical activity and get information about health and drug and alcohol-free facts. Each year the hike activities at the end vary as the planning committee changes but one thing stays constant, a 5K walk/run around the city of Hamtramck.

“We have had health screenings by nursing students done, cooking demonstrations, focus on healthy numbers with blood pressure and others, as well as fun things for kids as most participants were school age children. It has become an event that is looked forward to and many participants come every single year. We expect that because of COVID-19 this year, most events were cancelled, and we wanted to still do this, so the community had something to look forward to.”

Sterling continues to help community events in Hamtramck, sponsoring and donating time and resources to keep the residents of the city active and engaged. This summer alone, they have given back or supported the police department, fire department, the library, Hamtramck Disneyland, the city parks, and local restaurants.
