ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Sterling Oil, in a continuing drive to diversify their bulk liquid transportation business, is now permitted to transport non-hazardous waste material after obtaining a site identification number through the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).

To become an approved waste transporter, Sterling worked with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy in processing the paperwork to become a non-hazardous waste transporter. The departments mission is to protect Michigan’s environment and public health by managing air, water, land, and energy resources.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) needs to keep track of non-hazardous materials and waste by-products as they travel on public roads, highways, railways, and waterways. To do this, EGLE assign a site identification number to the transportation company as a whole and not each truck. This way, each truck in the company uses the specific site identification number instead of a generator EPA ID number. Once a site is approved with an identification number, the company can begin transporting waste material.

Sterling, following multiple inquiries from interested customers to transport their waste bulk liquid, researched the market and saw that it fit with the other niche markets they are currently servicing. Once they saw it was a fit for their business, they decided to move forward with obtaining the transporter ID.

Sterling currently transports speciality petroleum and chemical bulk liquids, some of which are seasonal products like deicer and fertilizer. The additional opportunities available with a transporter ID allows Sterling to increase their revenues and widen the scope of what their drivers can haul across Metro Detroit and the Midwest. The company has a long history of offering high quality service for bulk liquid transportation and that will continue as they begin to offer transportation of waste material.
