This summer I was given the opportunity to work as an intern at Sterling Services facility in Hamtramck, Michigan. At first, I did not know what to expect because I have never worked at a company such as this one but I was definitely excited to gain a new experience that would hopefully be worthwhile.
From the first day I started, I worked on the community garden which is right outside of the facility. Personally speaking, I have never gardened before but this project not only gave me the opportunity to garden, but it also gave me the opportunity to give back to my community since the vegetables grown from the garden are used for the community BBQ which takes place every year at the end of August.
Additionally, I worked on a project creating a maintenance book for the different parts of Sterling Services relating to maintenance and the tasks the workers are required to do such as Hazmat training, Fire Extinguisher training, testing the pumps/valves, changing the eyewash stations, etc. I was given the opportunity to learn more about the company while also getting more experience with Microsoft Word and Excel which will definitely help me in my future endeavors.
This company has helped me gain a multitude of new skills that will be useful for me whilst also giving me the opportunity to build up my resume in another way aside from volunteering and extracurricular activities. Sterling Services is a company that gives back to the community in many different ways and it was great being able to be a part of that by working here this summer.
From gardening to creating a maintenance book to learning more about the company, I am thankful for the opportunity Jason gave me by hiring me to work here this summer. I want to thank Jason, Alice, and everyone at the facility who made this experience worthwhile.
