The Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce (ROCC) has been awarding $1,000 scholarships to deserving high school seniors for many years. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the world in 2020, fundraising for the 2021 senior class was unattainable with closed businesses and cancelled events.
Sterling Oil is a long-standing member of the ROCC and when they put out a call to action, Sterling is always willing to answer that call with their resources and time. Their Vice President of Operations, Jason Eddleston, is on the ROCC Board of Directors and has been since 2016. Community initiatives like the Chamber Scholarship Fund are exactly the type of philanthropy his business likes to help.
It is particularly important to the Chamber to continue the scholarship awards program, so the ROCC reached out to its membership in hopes they would be able to help them with raising money for these scholarships. This year, the Chamber is looking to create as many $1,000 scholarship awards as they can fund. Sterling Oil is one of the companies that answered the call and donated to the fund.
In a normal year, the Chamber would host a Euchre Tournament, raise money through tips from helping Royal Oak in Bloom flower deliveries and pick-ups, as well as their Business Women’s Network. With all this hard work, the Chamber has had the ability to offer at least one scholarship the past several years.
